Changes to Information Mapping® workshops
From the 17th May 2010, two new Information Mapping® workshops will replace the Mapping Business Communications and Mapping Information for Paper, Online and Web workshops.
Many thanks to everyone who participated in our Training Needs survey last year – we’re pleased to be able to bring your suggestions to life!
We’ve switched to a modular workshop structure that gives you:
We’ve also updated our manuals, exercises, case studies and quick reference cards. We want you to have the best possible tools to apply your knowledge to the New Zealand business environment.

Below are answers to the following questions:
Can I do the 1-day Information Mapping® Foundation by itself?
What about the online/web material? Don’t you cover online content anymore?
I wanted to do the old Mapping Business Communications (MBCO) workshop. What should I do now?
I wanted to do the old Mapping Information for Paper, Online and Web workshop. What should I do now?
If your question isn’t listed here, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Day 1 of both Effective Business Writing and Developing Structured Information for Online and Paper is exactly the same. We call this day the Information Mapping® Foundation. Participants already certified in Information Mapping® (i.e. those who have attended a workshop in the past) do not need to attend the Foundation. They can attend day 2 only of Effective Business Writing, or days 2 and 3 only of Developing Structured Information for Online and Paper.
In general, no. The Foundation covers the principles of Information Mapping®, but not how to apply the method. Alone it would not be enough to train someone properly, and we need to teach Information Mapping® to a certain standard to protect the integrity of the method. The only possible exceptions are people who’ve been trained in Information Mapping® in the past and want to brush up on the basic principles. If this sounds like you, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Of course we do! We’ve made the assumption that, as online writing is now ubiquitous, we don’t need to indicate this in the workshop titles. What you’ll learn in our workshops is as relevant for the screen as it is for paper. Both workshops cover internet, intranet and email writing; however if you want to learn strategies for structuring large amounts of online content (using menus, tabs, breadcrumbs etc) you should attend Developing Structured Information for Online and Paper.
Use the table below to find the option that would best suit you.

You should attend the Effective Business Writing workshop, which includes everything that was taught in the MBCO.
You should attend the Developing Structured Information for Online and Paper workshop, which includes everything that was taught in the MPOW.
Think about the kinds of documents you’re likely to write. If you’ll be working on shorter documents (e.g. a job aid), then do Effective Business Writing. If you’ll be working on longer documents (e.g. a training manual), then do Developing Structured Information for Online and Paper.
