1. Write for the reader

Logical, reader-focused organisation

A well-written document is designed for its readers' needs. It should be organised logically, in a way that allows them to:

  • find the information they need quickly, and
  • understand the information the first time they read it.

Two key questions

When sitting down to write any document, the first two questions you need to ask are: "Why am I writing this?" and "Who am I writing this for?"

The answers to those two questions should drive everything about the document including:

  • scope of the content
  • organisation of the information, and
  • level of detail.
